How to Play

Play Master Chess game online for free. Master Chess is a classic 2-player competitive chess game that can be played with a friend or against a computer. Defeat your opponent by capturing their king. This game is rendered in mobile-friendly HTML5, so it offers cross-device gameplay. You can play it on mobile devices like Apple iPhones, Google Android powered cell phones from manufactures like Samsung, tablets like the iPad or Kindle Fire, laptops, and Windows-powered desktop computers. All game files are stored locally in your web browser cache. This game works in Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and other modern web browsers.

Starting the Game

To begin the game, select the play arrow button on the bottom of the screen.
This takes you to the Choose Game Mode Screen.
You can choose to play in 2-player mode with a friend locally, or against the computer.
The game also allows you to set your preferred difficulty. The default mode is normal.
Select a box with stars at bottom of the screen to set the difficulty:
- 1 star – Easy
- 2 stars – Normal
- 3 stars – Hard
- After selecting a starred box, select if you want to play with a friend or against the computer.
- Once you select your preferred player, the game immediately begins.
- Other Opening Screen Buttons
  - On the top right corner is the audio button. Select this to mute or unmute the game’s sound effects.
  - On the top left corner is the “i” button. This displays details about the game developer.
  - On the top left corner is another icon, which is the full view button. Select this to put your screen in full view.
  - To put your screen back to normal view, simply select the full view button again or press ESC on your keyboard.
  - Game Controls
    - Touchscreen
      - Using your finger, tap a piece you want to move.
      - Tapping a piece highlights squares where that particular piece can move.
      - You cannot move a piece into a square that is not highlighted on the board.
      - Select the square where you want your piece to go. It will automatically move there.
        If your king is on checkmate, the board puts the opponent’s square in red to alert where the threat is coming from.
        When you select the king, the board will highlight safe squares where you can go. It will set squares in red if moving there put’s the king in danger.
        Besides the king, other pieces do not have this alert feature. So be mindful of your moves.
        Mouse
        Using your mouse cursor, left click on a piece you want to move.

        Strategy
        Chess is a classic competitive board game that compels 2 players to be strategic with every move.
        The goal is to trap your opponent’s king on checkmate to win the game. If your opponent captures your king in checkmate, it’s game over.
        It’s crucial to memorize and master movements in chess to outsmart your opponent.
        Each piece can only move a certain way according to the rules. Refer to the basic movements below:
        King – Can only move one square horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Cannot jump over pieces.
        A special move called castling is allowed for a king, only once per player, per game.
        Castling is a move where the king is move two squares towards a rook, then the rook is placed on the other side of the king next to it. You are not allowed to move both king and rook at same time. Castling is only allowed in the following conditions:
        The king and the rook has not been moved
        There should be no pieces between the king and the rook
        The king should not be in check or end up in a checked position
        Queen – Can move any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Cannot jump over pieces.
        Rook – Can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically only. Cannot jump over pieces.
        Bishop – Can move any number of squares diagonally only. Cannot jump over pieces.
        Knight – Can move in an L pattern forward or backward. A knight can can jump over pieces.
        Pawn – If a pawn has not moved yet, it can move two squares forward.
        If a pawn has moved previously, it can only move one square forward.
        The pawn is the only piece that captures differently from the way it moves.
        A pawn can capture any piece that is placed diagonally on a square where it can move forward.
        When a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it can be promoted into 4 different pieces: a queen, rook, bishop, or knight.
        Because the queen can move any number of squares in all directions, it’s ideal to promote your pawn into a queen.
        It’s legal to have multiple queens on in a game. So take advantage of this rule.
        Players normally open a game with a pawn moving forward. This makes way for your bishops, knights, and rooks to move. Providing enough openings also prevents your opponent from tapping your king.
        Try to move the bishops and knights toward the center of the board. Placing them forward gives them better chances to attack. But be mindful of your opponent’s counter attacks.
        Always analyze your opponent’s move. Think what their last move did and how it affected the game.
        Is your opponent putting traps to capture your pieces? Did they see an opening toward your king or queen?
        Once you know the purpose of their move, you’ll get a better idea how to set your next move.
        Always double-check the outcome of your next move. Does this leave any piece unprotected? If so, is it a worthwhile sacrifice? Consider the consequences. Take your time.
        Castle early in the game – Castling is a move that helps protect your king and plays up the rook to attack. It’s the only move where more than once piece can be moved in a turn. If your opponent does not castle and the squares are open, you may be able to launch an attack against their king.
        Lose your pieces wisely. Throughout the game, you and your opponent will capture each other’s pieces. Prioritize which pieces to keep. The most powerful piece is a queen, so be careful not to lose it.
        Next to the queen is the rook, which moves horizontally and vertically, followed by the bishop, the knight, and lastly, the pawn. But don’t underestimate your pawn. Promote them early enough to use another queen.
        Finally, be patient. Don’t rush to capture your opponent’s pieces or contrive a checkmate. Winning the end game takes time.
